Tony Jones - The Boatyard Print E-mail

The Jones family have owned The Boatyard since 1982. Tony Jones has run the companys accounts on a spreadsheet package for a number of years, which he has found adequate but not ideal.

The Boatyard specialises in the sale and repair of power boats and is the Mariner Outboard motor agent for the Midrand area. The Boatyard prides itself on having a wide selection of boats always available.

We installed EconoAccounting, but decided to run our Excel-based accounting system in parallel, just in case EconoAccounting did not live up to the claims made by the supplier.

We put EconoAccounting to the test and found it did exactly what the developers said it would. But even more surprising, it was easy to use. To do the allocation of bank transactions takes about a day each week. Previously, this took much longer, and it was a tedious and time-consuming task with lots of typing, he says.

Previously, we had tried one of the much-advertised SME accounting products, but although it was advertised for the SME market, we found it very difficult to use and much more complicated than we required.

Our spreadsheet package was great but not sophisticated enough to easily produce a balance sheet. It was also cumbersome for the auditors when doing their annual audit, says Tony.

When we heard about EconoAccounting and its ability to download transactions electronically from our bank account, we were intrigued but sceptical. We process up to 500 bank entries per month, which makes the accounting task even more challenging. EconoAccounting works. It downloads transactions via the Internet in a few minutes.

When we used a bookkeeper, we were continually being asked where to allocate each item. Now we can do it ourselves in a fraction of the time.

With a proportion of allocations now done automatically, this task has really been simplified. We now use an accountant for more productive work, giving us better value. We have also reduced our accounting fees, he says.
